The Gail Yates Memorial Fund provides extracurricular scholarships for students at Hillcrest Elementary:
Junior Beta Club
The mission of the National Junior Beta Club is to recognize and honor high academic achievement, prepare youth for a successful future, to promote good character, and develop leadership skills. Members are expected to display excellent citizenship, exemplary achievement, commendable attitude, and demonstrate the Club’s motto: Let us lead by serving others. The Fund helps to defray the costs of annual dues to join the Club.
Walters State Community College Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program
Students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement are invited to participate in this six-week program which provides a variety of hands-on, immersive classes across a variety of disciplines, including science, the arts, and history. The Fund helps to defray the costs of tuition to the program.
Safety Patrol
Safety patrol members assist cafeteria staff with breakfast duties, monitor hallways to ensure students report to the appropriate teacher for morning bus duty, and provide assistance to teachers and administrative staff. Students are selected for their courtesy, dependability, commitment to the job, attitude toward others, and scholastic standing. Each year those who participate in this program are invited on a special trip to learn more about our state or federal government. In Spring 2016, safety patrol members traveled to Washington, D.C. to tour our nation’s capital, and the Fund provided partial scholarships to 19 of the 21 students who attended. In Spring 2017, students visited Nashville and spent time at Centennial Park and the State Capitol, and safety patrol members will be returning there in 2018.
